Design: the interstitial space

Diagrams are abstract because they are conceptually and ontologically distinct from material reality, but are agencies of assemblage, organization and deployment. Every situation is a composition of forces, expression of the diagram, an abstract device.

Every composition of forces is part of larger assemblages, through which they communicate. Events in one place reflect in other places and scales. Fields are the models of the incidents of influence that we call diagrams. How remote events, separate in time rather than space, are related?

The challenge of design: to approach the incorporeal, interstitial space. The space of synthesis, integration and catastrophe. Interaction of dynamic systems: one invisible (diagram) and another visible (the real). The virtual is related to the actual not by transposition, but by a transformation, through integration, organization and coordination. They are not immaterial, but incorporeal. They develop in time, not in space.

Research targets macroscopic, hybrid and global phenomena, conceived as open systems. They grasp these phenomena through their qualities. They are organizations of effect, not quantities. The world is of events. Qualities are dense and complex entities. We have to investigate the qualitative world in a systematic mode.

configurations and variations of flow and fixity within paracrystalline structures.

A new integrated and self-organizing type of matrix: a soft system. The system is guided by its capacity to move and to differentiate internally, to absorb and to exchange information with its surroundings, to develop complex interdependent subsystems. A dense network of information and feedback.

Shape nonlinear systems that change in indeterminate ways over time, continuously revealing new properties, forms and patterns. Systems of complex development, globally continuous and integral even when they are resultant of successive local catastrophes.

Search critical points in geometric organization. Precarious points of liquefaction, where a new range of behavior emerge. Regions that are activity islands that remain in continuous fluctuation. The complexity and creativity of a geometric system reach its maximum at its liquid transition point, at its softest state.
