Trata-se de uma reflexão metodológica em torno da noção de representação, aplicada à pesquisa sobre a relação entre o protestantismo e a cultura brasileira. Esta relação, historicamente construída em todo o Brasil, foi identificada em duas cidades, a capital da República, o Rio de Janeiro, e a capital do Maranhão, São Luís. Foram tomados textos e imagens veiculados através da literatura, do jornal e de um quadro, compondo um conjunto de representações sobre o protestantismo. O propósito, portanto, é discutir a pertinência e o alcance que esta noção oferece à pesquisa sobre a história do protestantismo no Brasil.

The article contains a methodological reflection on the notion of representation applied to the research on the relation between the Protestantism and the Brazilian culture. This relation, which was historically built every where in Brazil, was identified in two cities, the capital of the Republic, Rio de Janeiro, and the capital of Maranhão, São Luis. Texts and images taken from literatuliterature, newspapers and from a picture were used, forming a group of representations of Protestantism. Therefore, the purpose is to discuss the importance and the reach that this notion offers to the research on the history of Protestantism in Brazil.

Il s'agit d'une réflexion méthodologique sur la notion de représentation, appliquée à la recherche du rapport existant entre le protestantisme et la culture brésilienne. Ce rapport, établi au long de l’histoire dans la totalité du Brésil, a été particulièrement observé à la ville de Rio, la capitale de la République, et à São Luís, la capitale de l’état du Maranhão. Nous avons utilisé des textes et des images de la littérature, de la presse et d’un tableau, pour composer un ensemble des représentations du protestantisme. Notre objectif est donc de discuter soit la pertinence soit la contribution de cette notion à la recherche de l’histoire du protestantisme au Brésil.

Basierend auf methodologischen Reflexionen über das Konzeptes der Darstellung, behandelt der Artikel den Zusammenhang von Protestantismus und brasilianischer Kultur. Diese historisch gewachsene, landesweit geltende Beziehung wird am Beispiel zweier Städte konkretisiert, nämlich erstens an der einstigen Bundeshauptstadt Rio de Janeiro und zweitens an der Landeshauptstadt von Maranhão, São Luís. Der Autor wertet diverse Text- und Bildmaterialien aus Literatur und Tageszeitungen aus, die sich zu einer umfassenderen Darstellung des Protestantismus zusammenfügen. Die Frage, ob und inwieweit eine solche Darstellung der historischen Erforschung des Protestantismus in Brasilien insgesamt angemessen ist, verweist dann noch einmal zurück auf die eingangs genannte methodologische Problemstellung.
