The industrial architecture, until middle of the century, was based on rigid
and massive structures, determining inflexible use and circulation programs. Spaces
conditioned by heavy machinery, material distribution, products draining and work
management. Disciplinary spaces of the industrial work. The vast floors of the
tower east, today empty, keep all the features of this rigid space structuring.
The access stairs and the internal architectural elements guide the passage and
the apprehension of the place.
The proposal of Ana Tavares aims at breaking this systematic of access and
perception. It is the installation of an ensemble of walkthroughs and stairs that
connect the diverse existing areas in the floors and, through openings made in
the flagstone, the different floors. Establishing an entirely distinct device
of circulation from that imposed by the architectonic structure. The path does
not intend to offer access to the places. On the opposite, it aims to evidence
the impossibility of physical access to specific places and, at the same time,
to provide an extended vision of the architecture. The ensemble must create an
illogical traffic network, dislocating the visitor from its usual point of view
and providing a distinct spatial experience to it.
The intervention intends to create a circulation device analogous to the underground
tunnels projected for the stream of people in subways or public spaces in big
cities, where passage is turned into a solitary experience and mapping of the
effective city into a labyrinthic and chaotic tram. The reference to Piranesi,
with his detached spaces and stairs that give to nowhere, is evident. It is not
the case of creating an alternative access program to the places. The project
does not obey the rules of functionality of industrial architecture, but tries
to discuss the lack of accessibility of these closed spaces.
The intervention makes possible the traffic of people in the most diverse directions,
through the architectonic obstacles, in contraposition to the structural logic.
It links distant spaces through the transposition of others, next. It connects
overlapped spaces, in different floors, without giving access to intermediate
floors. It links a floor to another one passing through outside the building.
A dissolution of the rigid space structuring determined by architecture, approaching
areas before distant and distancing others until then neighboring, suppressing
the distinction between above and side, interior and exterior.
The space configuration and the resultant circulation device correspond to
the urban fabric fragmentation and to the formation of intervals and enclaves,
rearticulated through innumerable transpositions and connections of transit, one
of the essential features of the East Zone of São Paulo.
