The First Latin American GeoGebra Conference is part of the activities promoted by the Geogebra Institute of São Paulo, launched on August 2010. The research group Technologies and Ways of Expression in Mathematics (TecMEM) of the Postgraduate Studies Program on Mathematics Education of PUC-SP has among its responsibilities the creation and maintenance of the GeoGebra Institute of São Paulo, based in the Faculty of Exact Science and Technology.
Researchers, developers and lecturers from different parts of the world involved with GeoGebra have been participating in events in Europe and in the United States. However this is the first time such an event is organized in Latin America. Considering the importance of Brazil and the amount of facilities that São Paulo offers for events, the GeoGebra Institute of São Paulo decided to organize this conference for the Latin American public in the main languages of the region, Spanish and Portuguese. In Latin America there are currently only three institutes, one in Argentina and two in Brazil: at the Universidade Federal Fluminense and now at PUC-SP.
Students of the Postgraduate Studies in Mathematics Education have also defended dissertations and thesis on the use of GeoGebra, positively contributing for the Mathematics Education. Finally this conference aims to be an opportunity to promote these works and consolidate partnerships with institutions from other states and countries.
