ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Program of Graduate Studies in Literature and Literary Criticism at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) focuses on the literary phenomenon as a theoretical and critical determinant in the scope of research and teaching, as well as in the range of its extra-curricular activities. It promotes a study that resizes and updates the understanding of literature and literary criticism, by always establishing dialogue with the historical-cultural context.

HISTORY

The Program of Graduate Studies in Literature and Literary Criticism at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) focuses on the literary phenomenon as a theoretical and critical determinant in the scope of research and teaching, as well as in the range of its extra-curricular activities. It promotes a study that resizes and updates the understanding of literature and literary criticism, by always establishing dialogue with the historical-cultural context. Graduate studies at Master level were accredited in 2002, per Ordinance number 177/02, with publication in O.G. on 01/29/02.

General objectives:

The Program of Graduate Studies in Literature and Literary Criticism has among its general objectives the training of masters capable of acting in different teaching and research activities in Literature and/or related areas, by observing the specificity of their object of study, the effective dialogue between literature and other areas of knowledge, and maintaining research and teaching relationships with national and international contexts, in order to contribute and respond to the country's demands at different levels of social insertion.

Specific objectives:

Among its specific objects, the following are highlighted:

A) to discuss literature as an artistic manifestation, from a multiple perspective, closely linked to the formation and transformation of man and society;

B) to reflect on the history of literature and its different possibilities and historiographical manifestations;

C) to reflect on literary criticism as an object of research and propose new conceptual and methodological networks;

D) to analyze and interpret the literary object, using appropriate methodologies that allow crosses between different arts and areas of knowledge;

E) to know and to research new literary supports, in order to act more effectively in the cultural universe.

AREAS OF CONCENTRATION/ RESEARCH LINES

The Program of Graduate Studies in Literature and Literary Criticism has one major area of concentration and three different research lines.

AREA OF CONCENTRATION

Literature is the major area of concentration, an area which is the driving force behind the research lines and research projects, as well as the intellectual production of faculty and students.

RESEARCH LINES

RL-1: Literary Poetics: Oral, Written and Technological Manifestations

Description: This line of research approaches historical and cultural manifestations and transformations of the literary-poetic practice from its origins, in connection with dance and singing, with complex verbal operations, as well as with processes of poeticization and narrativity and their continuous cycle of production/reception.

RL-2: Literary Criticism: Tradition and New Cultural/Aesthetic Perspectives

Description: This line of research approaches literary criticism: its concept, types, and transformations in different historical and cultural moments. It focuses on the study of interpretation and aesthetic evaluation of literary works and conceives criticism as a creative link between the past and the present of culture.

RL-3: Literature: Historiography and Comparative Studies

Description: This research line deals with the principles and methods of Comparative Literature as the space of articulation of literary production, conservation and transmission of memory. It includes historiographical and/or comparative studies of lusophone literatures with other literatures and cultures.

CNPQ (BRAZILIAN NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT) CERTIFIED RESEARCH GROUPS

1. The Narrator and the Boundaries of Narrative

Description:

This Research Group was created in 2004. As of 2016, in parallel to the finalization of the book on contemporary narrativity (EDUC), it has been developing its work around themes suggested from the reading of 2 contemporary Brazilian novels: Inquérito policial Família Tobias, by Ricardo Lisias and De mim já nem se lembra, by Luiz Ruffato. From the first, the theme of performative realism was the subject of reflection in the texts "Affective Realism: evoke realism beyond representation", by Karl Erik Schøllhammer and "Percept, affect, and concept", by Deleuze and Guattari. The second, in turn, unfolds the study of the absent object and of the ghosts created by the imagination, and found in Agamben's reflections, "The Phantasms of Eros" and "The Theory of the Phantasm in Love Poetry of the Duecento”, its starting theoretical basis, followed by “Mourning and melancholia”, by Freud and “The Surviving Image”, by Didi-Huberman.

2. Studies in Poetics: synchronic and diachronic interconnections in Brazilian and Portuguese poetry

Description:

Created in 2005, the Group is comprised of professors and students who meet monthly to discuss fundamental issues related to poetry. In 2016, the Group continued its reflections and debates focusing on the theme: Poetry, Performance, Image. It devoted time to the analyses and discussion of current theoretical, critical and poetic texts, which raised the current questioning of crisis in Poetry Studies. Owing to these reflections, the Group organized its IV One-day Event entitled "Poetry-thought-performance", which was held on September 2, 2016 at PUC-SP. The event received poet Dr. Marília Garcia, with the lecture "Do que falamos quando falamos de uma hélice?", and promoted a round table discussion with Dr. Maria Lúcia Dal Farra (UFSE) and Dr. Viviana Bosi (USP), who dealt with issues of modern and contemporary poetry in Portuguese and Brazilian poets. It also opened for Communication Sessions that discussed, in the light of the theme chosen, among other aspects: Brazilian Concrete poetry in “Poemóbiles”, poetic translation, poetry and the city, the presence of Modernism in Amazonas and regional lyrical, animality in poetry, and the deconstruction of poetic making. The event was attended by nearly 100 people and its debates covered not only issues related to subjectivity, image, performance and thought, but also problematized these conceptions, in view of the dialogue with reality. The collection “Poesia: entre-lugares”, organized by Annita Costa Malufe and Maria Aparecida Junqueira, edited by Dobradura Editorial, was published in 2016 as a result of the group’s work.

3. Narrative Category

Description:

Created in July 2003, this Group has focused on the study of different narrative categories, always led by poetic questions that make the text an aesthetic object. The selection of theoretical readings is based on the level of complexity of the text, as well as on the theoretical framework required to incite reflections. To broaden its fictional and critical-theoretical repertoire, the Group has continuously worked towards the production and dissemination of knowledge as well as the literary writing experience itself.

4. Translation and Interpreting Studies

Description:

Created in 2003, the Group is comprised of Undergraduate and Graduate professors, who also work as translators and interpreters, sworn or non, as well as Undergraduate and Graduate students. It aims to reflect and debate on topics and issues relevant to the development and integration of two modalities of translation: oral and written. The discussions include theoretical and practical-theoretical approaches that may lead the research towards both the training of translators/interpreters and the study of links between these two fields. Since participants are inserted in teaching, the group’s reflections have positively affected the training of dozens of qualified professionals prepared to deal with the phenomena of oral and written language, in a critical and transformative perspective.

UEMA – Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (Maranhão State University)

In 2014 the Program of Graduate Studies in Literature and Literary Criticism set up a partnership with the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão. This partnership between the pro-rectors for research of both universities aims at enhancing the competence of professionals of education who teach in Brazil.
