Transterritorial Locations

 

A combination of dispersion and global integration created a new strategical role for the large metropolises, with massive changes in its economic base, space organization and social structure. A systemic discontinuity is established between the global city and its respective countries, and within the different sectors of one same city. It is a different mode of development: the growth of the global market induces to a discontinuity in the national urban systems, engendering new forms of transnational interdependence.

The international mobility of the capital and its increasing speed produce specific forms of articulation between different geographic areas. A mutation in the space expression of the logic of the accumulation occurs. New forms of locacional concentration appear, resultant of the mobility of the capital and its geographic dispersion. The development of forms of agglomeration of central functions that are not determined geographically. A change in the geography of the economic activities, that implies the constitution of new relations between the some components of each particular location.

A space at the same time centered in strategical locations and transterritorial in the measure where it connects sites that are not approached geographically. The global integration depends on a multiplicity of linkages between the involved financial centers: multinational networks of geographic and institutional connections. A complex and dense grid of connections and sites.
