The territory embraced by MG/ES is constituted by large complexes of mining, siderurgy and cellulose production and by the infrastructure connects them to other industrial and agricultural centers and to the ports. This territorial device produces different urban systems. The mining operations conflicts with old cities or, more recently, are integrated in areas of urban expansion. The steel plants had created planned cities, while the companies of reforestation for cellulose articulate the existing urban areas through transport systems. The relations of these operations with the territory are characterized by the massive impact in local situations. In the Espirito Santo coast, it occurs an extension of the port system. The regional centers , Belo Horizonte and Vitória, are expanded and reconfigured by the modernization of the transport infrastructure.

With privatization and internationalization, this productive and territorial system would pass through great transformations. The device mines - railroad - port is converted into a more complex and dynamic network. Flexibilization, technological changes and logistics redefine the productive processes and reconfigure the geography of the territory.

It is a new spatial model: it establishes another type of territoriality, that intersects with distant spaces, situated outside the system. Globalization establishes a infrastructural project, aiming at the montage of maximum possibility collected from any point, removed from any context. Concentration is the engine of the space organization. Relativization of the distances, approaching remote situations and excluding others, more close. Intensive articulation of all the productive elements, maximizing its operational power. It is the global territorial device.

But this productive and spatial restructuring also allows new configurations, flexible and mutant, to appear. A complex topography, where local conditions are linked with the globalized space, producing interstitial zones, intervals, new territories. The flexibilization of the production and infrastructure, the logistic and intermodal systems, make possible the constitution of new centers of management of services and flows, attributing a new role to the cities. The dynamics produced by the large corporate operations can be a counterpoint to the verticalization of the production chain, potentializing the irrigation of the territory with new activities.
