Brazilian companies are concentrated in coastal navigation. The maritime barks allow a cost reduction, between 15% and 40%, in relation to the road transportation. The main kind of load moved by coastal navigation: chemical products, oil, iron ore, wood, electronic and steel products.

Cabotage is one of the CVRD activities in logistics, carrying 150 million tons of products related to foreign commerce. The maritime modal is used by Aracruz, transporting wood to Portocel terminal (ES), close to the cellulose company installations. The system also serves CST, carrying steel bobbins to Vega do Sul, a rolling mill in Santa Catarina.

With the Brazil-Japan agreements, the Brazilian naval construction industry was, in the 50's, one of the world largest. The cooperation between the two countries changed the world-wide long distance navigation, creating a logistic system that included large ports and ships for ore transportation.

CVRD had the second bigger merchant fleet. In the 80's, local ship construction and the Brazilian navigation companies had disappeared. CVRD abandoned the transoceanic transport, to operate with tradings and international navigation companies.
