Oil has an important role in the Brazilian energetic matrix, with 30% of the energy production. Brazil has reserves of 13 billion oil barrels. The offshore oil production is very important, answering for 80% of the total produced in the country, one million of daily barrels proceeding from 74 fixed and 23 floating platforms. The Campos Basin, in Rio de Janeiro, is the main petroliferous province, producing more than 80% of the national oil.

Petrobras, the state-owned company, also carry through exploration and distribution of oil and natural gas in Espirito Santo. Large deposits had just been found, located 84 km south of Vitória, with reserves of 900 million oil barrels. The production is drained by pipe-line to the port of Regencia, in Linhares, where it is embarked to the refineries.

The natural gas reserves are 13 billion m3 and production is 750 thousand m3/day, 300 thousand used in the CVRD pellets plants. The gas-lines network serves the cities in the Great Vitória. Consumption is dominated by the steel (54%) and cellulose (24%) segments. Petrobras is constructing gas-line branches to the Steel Valley (MG), where are located several steel industries. The gas-line, with 1.664 km, will serve the CVRD plants in Ouro Preto, being extended later to supply Belgo-Mineira, Acesita and Usiminas
