The macro-region has the two world largest companies producing white cellulose. The total regional production, today extended to the south of Bahia, was of 8 millon/t of cellulose and 7,6 million/t of paper in 2002. The planted area is 1,5 million acres. Brazil is the seventh world-wide cellulose producer, employing around 100 thousand people.

Cenibra (in MG) is controlled by Japanese trust JPB. It has about 155 thousand acres of land for plantation and transports its production through EFVM. The company is a large land owner, distributed over 38 districts in the region. New front of industrial expansion, Cenibra produces new forms of urbanization in the region, based on the displacement of its labor force, conditioning the spatial and demographic dynamics of its area of influence.

Aracruz Celulose has its plant located at 65 km from Vitória (ES), close to the port of Barra do Riacho. The lands of Aracruz enclose more than 16 districts and half million inhabitants. The company is creating a new eucalyptus project, in Bahia. Aracruz is one of the main agents of transformations in the region. Its territorial occupation strategies have produced new spatial configurations and infrastructures.
