The mining complex created by CVRD in Itabira (MG) is exemplary of the urban processes started by the implantation of big companies in areas unprovided of infrastructure. CVRD is the most important restructuring agent of the city urban space, molded according the mining operations. Neighborhoods and equipments are constructed or disappear, as improvements are necessary for the production expansion.

The urban site of Itabira is directly connected to the mines, limited by the ore deposits and barrages for rejects containment, immense sanded areas that occupy valleys, agricultural lands and urban areas. Several residential quarters are situated inside of the mining area perimeter. The railroad branches that serve the mines cut the city in all directions, completely disorganizing the urban fabric.

CVRD and the local government established agreements on environmental protection and displacement of the railway line out of the urban perimeter. In the remaining area it will be constructed an avenue connecting several quarters, allowing the rejoint of the city's different parts. The reconfiguration of the EFVM tracing, already undertaken in other stretches of the railroad, will imply an important reorganization of the urban space in Itabira.
